Mefenamic acid

Indications/Uses

Primary dysmenorrhea & relief of moderate pain when therapy will not exceed 1 wk.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Acute pain Adult & childn ≥14 yr 500 mg tds, usually not to exceed 1 wk. Primary dysmenorrhoea 500 mg tds, starting w/ onset of bleeding & associated symptoms. Not to exceed 7 days of use.

Overdosage

Administration

Should be taken with food: Preferably taken w/ food.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to aspirin or other NSAIDs. Bronchospasm, allergic rhinitis or urticaria; active ulceration or upper/lower GIT chronic inflammation. Preexisting renal disease, renal impairment.

Special Precautions

Discontinue use at 1st appearance of skin rash, mucosal lesions or any other sign of hypersensitivity. Serious skin reactions eg, generalised bullous fixed drug eruption (GBFDE); exfoliative dermatitis, TEN, SJS. Patients w/ CV disease or risk; fluid retention, oedema or heart failure. History of GI events & other risk factors associated w/ PUD eg, alcoholism, smoking & corticosteroid therapy. May exacerbate asthma & HTN. Closely monitor BP during initiation & at regular intervals thereafter. Concomitant use w/ non-selective NSAIDs, aspirin, anticoagulants. Renal impairment & history of renal or hepatic disease. Not recommended during late pregnancy. Not to be taken during lactation. Childn <14 yr. Elderly or debilitated patients.

Adverse Reactions

GI upsets or rashes; haemolytic anaemia, agranulocytosis, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia, thrombocytopenic purpura, bone marrow aplasia; diarrhoea; GBFDE.

Drug Interactions

Increased steady-state plasma lithium levels. Frequent prothrombin time monitoring w/ oral anticoagulants.
