Special Precautions
Propylthiouracil crosses the placenta and can cause disruption of the fetus when given to pregnant women, causing goiter and hyperthyroidism in the fetus. Therefore, dose adjustment is needed when used during pregnancy to regulate hyperthyroidism and stop therapy in the third trimester of pregnancy.
Patients receiving Propylthiouracil should be monitored and advised to contact a doctor immediately if symptoms of pain appear such as headache, fever, sore throat, skin damage, feeling unwell because they are symptoms of agranulocytosis.
Hypersensitivity reactions may occur in some patients.
Beware of bone marrow depression, impaired liver function in asthmatics. Discontinue administration if there is a polyserositis syndrome that looks-like lupus erythematosus. Patients who have had success with antithyroid treatment at risk of hyperthyroidism, need to check regularly every year.
