Adult Oral 15 g tid to qid. Rectal 30 g daily given as susp in 100 mL of 2% methylcellulose '450' & water 100 mL retained for at least 9 hr. OralChildnAcute hyperkalemia 1 g/kg daily in divided doses. Reduce to maintenance dose of 500 mg/kg daily in divided doses. RectalChildn & neonates Similar w/ oral dose suggested for childn.
Not recommended to be given orally in neonates. Discontinue use in clinically significant constipation. Electrolyte disturbances including hypokalemia. Sudden increase of Ca in renal impairment &/or dialysis patients. Closely monitor electrolytes during therapy & discontinue if K ≤5 mmol/L (5 mEq/L). Monitor Ca wkly or more frequently. Avoid Mg-containing laxatives; concomitant use of rectal sorbitol. Pregnancy & lactation.
