Ileus and respiratory distress syndrome has been found to be more common in the offspring of pregnant women who receive isoxsuprine. Incidence of respiratory distress syndrome increases as the isoxsuprine concentration on cord blood exceeds 10 mg/mL. The incidence of hypocalcemia and hypotension rises progressively with increasing isoxsuprine concentrations in the cord blood. Use isoxsuprine in pregnant women only when potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to mother and infants. There are reports of problems with isoxsuprine in breastfeeding babies.
