Loperamide inhibits peristalsis and gastrointestinal secretions and is used in the management of acute and chronic diarrhea as well as in illeostomy management to control the volume of discharge. However, the main aim in treating acute diarrhea is the correction of fluid and electrolyte depletion with rehydration therapy this is especially important in infants and young children.
