Contents
Loperamide 2 mg, simeticone 125 mg
Indications/Uses
Relief of symptoms of diarrhea plus bloating, pressure & cramps, commonly referred to gas.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥12 yr 2 cap after the 1st loose stool, followed by 1 cap after each subsequent loose stool. Max: ≤4 cap/24 hr.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals. Take w/ full (240 mL) glass of water.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Swollen abdomen; abdominal pain in the absence of diarrhea; acute dysentery; pseudomembranous ulcerative colitis, acute ulcerative colitis, bacterial enterocolitis; constipation; difficulty in swallowing. Medical conditions where slowing of the intestines should be avoided. Childn <12 yr.
Special Precautions
Discontinue therapy at the earliest signs of abdominal distension in patients w/ AIDS or HIV. Should not be used for anything other than its intended use. Appropriate fluid & electrolyte intake in patients w/ diarrhea. Avoid alcohol, milk, fruits, green vegetables, & spicy or fatty foods. May cause loss/depressed level of consciousness, tiredness, dizziness, or drowsiness. Liver impairment. Use w/ special caution in young childn & those w/ compromised blood brain barrier (eg, meningitis). Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Loperamide: Nausea, constipation, headache, abdominal cramps & pain, dizziness, dry mouth, dysgeusia (altered taste), vomiting, flatulence, dyspepsia, drowsiness, fatigue, urinary retention, difficulty urinating, distension, or discomfort.
Drug Interactions
Loperamide: Increased plasma levels w/ ritonavir, quinidine, clarithromycin or erythromycin, quinine, itraconazole or ketoconazole, gemfibrozil. May increase constipating effect w/ medicines that reduce the action of stomach & intestines (eg, antidepressants & cold & allergy medications). May increase plasma levels w/ oral desmopressin. Concomitant use w/ medicines that cause drowsiness. Simeticone: Carbonated drinks & food that may increase gas in the stomach.
