Anticholinergic.
Pharmacology: Pharmacodynamics: Biperiden is an anticholinergic agent, which exerts its inhibitory action upon the parasympathetic nervous system by binding competitively to peripheral and central muscarinic (primarily M1) receptors, which results in the reduction of over-activity of cholinergic in the CNS. It is also believed that biperiden restores the balance between the excitatory (cholinergic) and inhibitory (dopaminergic) system in the corpus striatum, which contributes to its efficacy on the treatment of extrapyramidal symptoms and Parkinson's syndrome.
Pharmacokinetics: Biperiden is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, but bioavailability is only about 30% suggesting that it undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism. Biperiden has an elimination half-life of about 20 hours.
