Cetirizine HCl
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic relief of allergic conditions including rhinitis & chronic urticaria.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥6 yr 10 mg daily. Seasonal rhinitis Give at beginning of hay fever season when pollens are still few. Hepatic & renal impairment Reduce dose to 1/2 of usual daily dose.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cetirizine or hydroxyzine. Not recommended to hypokalemic patients w/ chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis. Not to be given to childn <6 yr w/ hepatic & renal impairment.
Special Precautions
Caution in patients who require mental alertness or physical coordination (eg, drivers or machine operators) since this may cause drowsiness. Pregnancy. Not recommended in lactating mothers. Not to be given to childn & infants. Elderly w/ most likely renal & hepatic impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness; irritability, insomnia, somnolence, fatigue, dry mouth, pharyngitis, dizziness, headache, abdominal pain, cough, diarrhea, epistaxis, bronchospasm, nausea & vomiting & hypersensitivity manifested by urticarial & fixed drug eruptions.
Drug Interactions
Sedation may be enhanced w/ CNS depressants eg, barbiturates, alcohol, hypnotics, opioid analgesics, anxiolytic sedatives & neuroleptics. Enhanced effects of alcohol & other CNS depressants.
