Skin surface anesth in connection w/ needle insertion, leg ulcers prior to cleaning & for superficial surgical procedures eg, removal of fibrin, pus & necroses; genital mucosal anesth.
AdultSkin Apply thick layer to skin & cover w/ occlusive dressing. Needle insertion eg, IV cannula, taking blood samples Approx 2 g/10 cm2. Minor superficial surgical procedure 1.5-2 g/10 cm2 for min: 1 hr, max 5 hr. Extensive superficial surgical procedure 1.5-2 g/10 cm2 for min: 2 hr, max: 5 hr. Leg ulcers 1-2 g/10 cm2 for 30 min, may be extended to 60 min if tissue is difficult to penetrate. Genital mucosa Apply approx 5-10 g for 5-10 min. ChildnNeedle insertion, mollusca removal & other minor superficial surgical procedures Max: 1 g/10 cm2, adjusted according to application area.
Not to be used on damaged tympanic membrane or situations w/ middle ear penetration. Not to be applied to genital mucosa of childn, open sores. Atopic dermatitis. G6PD deficiency, congenital or idiopathic methaemoglobinaemia. Avoid application near eyes. Concomitant use w/ class III antiarrhythmics eg, amiodarone. Carefully monitor intracutaneous live vaccine inj results. Pregnancy & lactation. Not to be used on childn ≤12 mth.
Local skin reactions eg, paleness, redness, edema.
Drug Interactions
Increased methaemoglobin formation w/ methaemoglobin-inducing drugs eg, sulphonamides. Additive toxic effects w/ other local anesth or agents structurally related to
local anaesth eg, tocainide. Caution w/ class III antiarrhythmics eg, amiodarone.
