White, round, biconvex tablet with Pharmaniaga icon on one side and plain on the other.
Each tablet contains Calcium lactate 300 mg.
Calcium is an essential body electrolyte. It is involved in the maintenance of normal muscle and nerve function, is essential for normal cardiac function and blood clotting. Calcium is the fifth most abundant element in the body, and the major fraction is in the bone structure. Calcium plays an important role for the functional integrity of the nerves and muscular systems, where it has a major influence on the excitability of these tissues. It is necessary for normal cardiac function and one of the factors involved in the coagulation of the blood.
In general, the major absorption takes place in the more proximal section of the small intestine. Glucocorticoids and low concentrations of calcitonin depress calcium transport across the small intestine. The factors like vitamin D3 and parathyroid hormone clearly augment calcium absorption. The metabolites of vitamin D3 is required for the active transport of calcium in the small intestine. Parathyroid hormone also causes increased intestinal absorption of calcium. Calcium is secreted in the gastrointestinal tract, in saliva, bile and pancreatic juice. This endogenous calcium and the unabsorbed dietary calcium constitute the sources of the cations excreted in the faeces.
The urinary excretion of calcium is the net result of the quantity filtered and the amount reabsorbed.
In the treatment of calcium deficiency and hypocalcaemia.
Adults: 300-1500 mg daily, depending on the requirement.
Route of Administration: Oral.
The symptoms of overdosage are constipation, anorexia, nausea and vomiting with abdominal pain and ileus, muscle weakness, thirst, polyuria, confusion, bone pain due to demineralisation, nephrocalcinosis, renal calculi and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias, coma and cardiac arrest.
Treatment: Calcium intake should be reduced at a minimum and large amounts of fluid given to combat dehydration and reduce renal deposition of calcium. In mild to moderate hypercalcaemia, sodium phosphate 2-16 g may be given by mouth.
In more severe cases, IV infusion of sodium phosphate, sodium sulphate, sodium chloride or sodium citrate should be given.
Calcium salts should be given cautiously to patients with impaired renal function or history of renal stone formation.
Calcium enhances the effects of digitalis on the heart and may precipitate digitalis intoxication.
Calcium salts also reduce the absorption of tetracyclines.
Effects on Ability to Drive and Use Machine: None known.
There is epidemiological evidence of the safety of calcium in pregnancy.
No problems are anticipated with the administration of Calcium during lactation.
Calcium salts may cause constipation.
Calcium must be used with care in patients receiving alternative compound vitamin or mineral preparations, which often contain additional sources of calcium.
Calcium enhances the effects of digitalis on the heart and may precipitate digitalis intoxication.
