Phentermine HCl
Indications/Uses
As an adjunct to treatment of patients w/ moderate to severe obesity.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 15 mg daily at breakfast & again at lunchtime if required. Alternatively, 30 mg can be taken at breakfast.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to phentermine HCl or sympathomimetic amines. Epilepsy. Advanced arteriosclerosis. Severe HTN. Hyperexcitability. Patients w/ CV disease. Hyperthyroidism. Glaucoma. Patients w/ history of drug abuse. During or 14 days following MAOIs administration. Childn <12 yr.
Special Precautions
May develop tolerance to anorectic effect w/in few wk; discontinue use if tolerance occurs. Patients w/ mild HTN. Concomitant use w/ guanethidine; dietary regimen. Possible drug abuse. Possible blurred vision, dizziness or tiredness; may affect ability to drive & use machinery. Not to be used during pregnancy & lactation. Avoid in childn <12 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Mouth dryness, restlessness, headache, insomnia, irritability, dizziness, tremor.
Drug Interactions
May alter insulin requirements in DM w/ concomitant dietary regimen. May decrease hypotensive effect of guanethidine. Not to be given to patients being treated w/ MAOIs or w/in 14 days of stopping treatment. May produce severe HTN w/ β-blockers & amphetamines. May increase risk of CV effects w/ amphetamines & TCAs. May increase risk of cardiac arrhythmias w/ volatile anaesth.
