Monobasic sodium phosphate monohydrate, dibasic sodium phosphate heptahydrate.
Description
Fleet Enema: Each 118 mL (delivered dose) contains monobasic sodium phosphate monohydrate 19 g and dibasic sodium phosphate heptahydrate 7 g in a 4.5-fl oz or 133-mL ready-to-use disposable squeeze bottle.
Sodium Content: 4.4 g per delivered dose.
The easy-grip, easy-squeeze bottle with soft, prelubricated comfortip assures ease of insertion. Its protective shield prevents contamination. The one-way safety valve controls flow and prevents reflux.
Fleet Enema Paediatric: Active Ingredients: Each 59ml (delivered dose) contains: 9.5g Monobasic Sodium Phosphate Monohydrate and 3.5g Dibasic Sodium Phosphate Heptahydrate.
Sodium content: 2.2g per delivered dose.
Excipients/Inactive Ingredients: Contains Benzalkonium chloride (0.06% w/w)/EDTA (0.10% w/w) as a preservative.
Action
Method of Action: Promotes evacuation of the bowel by increasing the bulk volume and water content of stool.
Effectiveness: Usually produces evacuation within 2 to 5 minutes. Effectively relieves constipation and cleanses lower bowel.
Indications/Uses
For use in the relief of occasional constipation; bowel cleansing before rectal examinations.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Fleet Enema: Adults: 1 bottle (118 mL, delivered dose) or as directed by physician. Children >2 years: ½ adult dose or as directed by physician.
Fleet Enema Paediatric: Dosage: Children over 2 years: One bottle (59ml delivered dose), or as directed by a physician. Do not administer to children under 2 years of age. If after the enema solution is administered there is no return of liquid, contact a physician immediately as dehydration could occur.
Administration: Directions for Use: Positioning: Left-Side Position: Lie on left side with knees bent, arms at rest.
Knee-Chest Position: Kneel, then lower head and chest forward until left side of face is resting on surface. Position arm comfortably.
Fleet Enema Paediatric: Positioning: Left-side position: Place child on left side with knees bent and arms resting comfortably.
Knee-chest position: Have child kneel, then lower head and chest forward until left side of face is resting on surface with left arm folded comfortably.
Administering Enema: Remove protective shield from rectal tip before using/inserting (Fleet Enema Paediatric): Hold bottle upright, grasping grooved bottle cap with fingers. Grasp protective shield with other hand, pull gently to remove.
With steady pressure, gently insert enema with tip pointing towards navel. Squeeze bottle until nearly all liquid is expelled. Remove tip from rectum.
Fleet Enema Paediatric: Discontinue use if resistance is encountered. Forcing the enema can result in injury.
Note: It is not necessary to empty unit/bottle (Fleet Enema Paediatric) completely. Bottle contains more than the amount of liquid needed for effective use. A small amount of liquid will remain in bottle after squeezing. Maintain position/keep child in position (Fleet Enema Paediatric) until urge to evacuate is strong (usually 2 to 5 minutes).
Warnings
Not to be taken orally.
Frequent or prolonged use of enemas may result in dependence. Do not use when nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain is present. If use results in unusual pain or other side effect and in case of accidental overdose, contact a physician immediately.
Fleet Enema Paediatric: Do not use laxative products when nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain is present. If the patient notices a sudden change in bowel habits that persist over a period of 2 weeks, consult a physician. Rectal bleeding or failure to have a bowel movement after use of a laxative may indicate a serious condition. Discontinue use and consult a physician. Laxative products should not be used longer than 1 week unless directed by a physician. Frequent or prolonged use of a laxative may result in dependence.
In case of accidental ingestion or overdose, seek professional assistance or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
Professional Use Warnings: Consult professional labeling for complete directions for use. Do not use in patients with congenital megacolon, imperforate anus or congestive heart failure as hypernatremic dehydration may occur. Use with caution in patients with impaired renal function, heart disease, or pre-existing electrolyte disturbances (such as dehydration or those secondary to the use of diuretics) or in patients on calcium channel blockers, diuretics or other medications which may affect electrolyte levels - or where colostomy exists, as hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypernatremia and acidosis may occur.
Special Precautions
