Xylometazoline hydrochloride.
Description
Xylometazoline HCl (Xylomet) nasal spray solution is a clear to colorless liquid packed in HDPE white plastic bottle by 15 mL.
Each mL contains: Xylometazoline hydrochloride, USP 1 mg.
Each mL of the solution contains 1 mg of Xylometazoline HCl (0.1%).
The other ingredients are sodium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose, sorbitol, propylene glycol, and purified water.
Indications/Uses
Xylometazoline HCl nasal spray is used for the symptomatic relief of nasal congestion due to common colds, upper respiratory allergies including hay fever and sinusitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
For application in the nose only.
For adults and children 12 years old and above: Apply 2 to 3 sprays in each nostril every 8 to 10 hours, or as prescribed by a physician.
Do not use xylometazoline HCl 0.1 % in children less than 12 years old.
Missed dose: If a dose is missed, spray the dose as soon as the patient remembers. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose or apply extra doses.
Overdosage
Signs and symptoms of overdose: Excessive application of this medicine may cause acute toxicity.
Accidental oral ingestion may result in poisoning particularly in children.
Signs and symptoms of toxicity include fast heartbeat and pulse rate, increased blood pressure, low body temperature (hypothermia), sweating, depressed consciousness and coma.
What to do if the patient has taken more than the recommended dosage: Seek medical attention or help for immediate supportive treatment if the patient has taken more than the recommended dose and/or experiencing any of the mentioned signs or symptoms of toxicity. There is no specific treatment or antidote for xylometazoline toxicity.
Contraindications
Do not use if the patient has allergies to xylometazoline or any of the ingredients.
Do not use if the patient has recently underwent neurosurgery.
Special Precautions
Do not swallow.
Do not exceed recommended dose. Do not use more than 3 doses in 24 hours.
Do not use continuously for more than seven (7) consecutive days.
Prolonged use may lead to rebound nasal congestion and nasal mucosal damage (rhinitis medicamentosa). If symptoms persist, patient must consult a doctor.
For hygiene reasons, once the bottle is opened the solution may be used for 28 days. Discard thereafter.
Consult a doctor or healthcare provider first before using this product if the patient has any of the following conditions: Overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism); Glaucoma; Diabetes mellitus; Heart or circulatory disease; Hypertension; If the patient is pregnant or breastfeeding.
When to consult a doctor: Seek medical attention immediately at the first sign or appearance of any adverse drug reaction.
Adverse Reactions
Xylometazoline may occasionally cause transient local irritation in the nose and throat, nausea, headache and dryness of the nasal mucosa.
Systemic cardiovascular effects have been reported. Consult a doctor before using xylometazoline nasal spray if the patient has been diagnosed of any cardiovascular disease.
Drug Interactions
Do not use this product if the patient is taking or have been taking the following medicines in the past 14 days: Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), Tricyclic antidepressants, Tetracyclic antidepressants.
Storage
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
