Glucosamine sulfate
Indications/Uses
All forms of degenerative osteoarticular disease. Primary & secondary osteoarthrosis eg, cervical arthrosis, coxofemoral arthrosis, gonarthrosis, dorsal arthrosis, lumbosacral arthrosis, scapulohumeral arthrosis, periarthritis, lumbago, fractures, osteoarticular dystrophies, chronic & subacute arthritis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Light or moderate arthrosic symptoms 1 cap 628 mg bid for at least 6 wk. Severe arthrosic symptoms Initial therapy: An initial treatment of 8 wk is recommended w/: 1 amp Viartril-S daily + 1 cap 628 mg bid during the 1st 2 wk followed by a maintenance therapy of 1 cap 628 mg bid during 6 wk. In the case that administration of parenteral route is contraindicated: 1 cap 628 mg tid or 1 sachet daily dissolved in water during a period of at least 8 wk. Follow-up therapy: Maintenance therapy should be followed by for 3-4 mth (1 cap 628 mg bid or 1 sachet daily dissolved in water). Treatment should be repeated every other 6 mth or less as required.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 15 min before meals. Powd for oral soln: Dissolve contents in a glass of water.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to glucosamine sulfate; shellfish. Viartril-S Patients w/ phenylketonuria; fructose intolerance.
Special Precautions
Asthmatic patients could be more susceptible to develop allergic reaction w/ possible exacerbation of symptoms. Patients on controlled Na diet; w/ impaired glucose tolerance. Closely monitor blood sugar levels in diabetics at the beginning of treatment. Exclude presence of other joint disease which would require alternative treatment. Severe hepatic or renal insufficiency. Caution if headache, somnolence, tiredness, dizziness or visual disturbances are experienced. Not to be used during pregnancy. Use during breastfeeding is not recommended. Not to be used in childn & adolescents <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, somnolence; diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, flatulence, abdominal pain, dyspepsia; tiredness.
Drug Interactions
Increased effect of coumarinic anticoagulants. Enhanced GI absorption of tetracyclines.
