Ursodeoxycholic acid
Indications/Uses
For the dissolution of cholesterol-rich gallstones in patients w/ functioning gallbladders; treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).
Dosage/Direction for Use
PBC Adult 13-15 mg/kg/day in 2-4 divided doses. Dissolution of gallstone 6-12 mg/kg/day as a single night time dose or in divided doses, may be increased to 15 mg/kg/day.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Variceal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy, ascites or in need of an urgent liver transplant. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal discomfort & pain, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting; pruritus, rash; resp disorders, general malaise, dizziness, calcified gallstones, increased liver enzymes, leukocytopenia & increase in serum bilirubin.
Drug Interactions
Reduced absorption w/ cholestyramine, colestipol & Al-based antacids. Increased hepatic cholesterol secretion, & cholesterol gallstone formation w/ estrogens, OC & clofibrate.
