Purified rabies vaccine (vero cell)
Indications/Uses
Pre- & post-exposure vaccination against rabies.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM 0.5 mL in deltoid for adult & in anterio-lateral region of thigh for infant & toddler. Intradermal 0.1 mL (per site) in each deltoid. Pre-exposure schedule Primary vaccination: 3 inj on days 0, 7 & 28 (inj schedule on day 28 may be administered on day 21). Booster inj: 1 yr later then every 5 yr. Post-exposure schedule Non-immunized subject IM 5 inj (0.5 mL) on days 0, 3, 7, 14 & 28. Intradermal 1 dose (0.1 mL) at 2 different sites (usually left & right upper arm) on days 0, 3, 7 & 28. Immunized subject w/ pre-exposure full course immunity w/in 1 yr, or pre-exposure & booster immunity 1 yr later w/in 3 yr 1 dose on days 0 & 3 respectively in case of another exposure. Immunized subject w/ pre-exposure immunity but no booster inj after 1 yr, or post-exposure full course immunity 1 yr before, or pre-exposure & booster immunity 1 yr later but is over 3 yr Full course vaccination in case of another exposure.
Contraindications
Pre-exposure immunization: Avoid use in patient who has seriously chronic disease, nervous system disease, serious hypersensitivity or has allergic history to antibiotic or biological product. Delay vaccination in patient who is pregnant or in active period of acute fever.
Special Precautions
Do not inj IV. IM: Do not inj in gluteal region. Not to be administered SC. Intradermal: Administer a new dose immediately if dose is inadvertently given SC or IM. Do not use in individuals receiving long term corticosteroid, other immunosuppressive therapy or chloroquine; immunocompromised individuals; individuals, particularly childn, w/ severe wounds especially to the head & neck or presenting late for consultation.
Adverse Reactions
Local reaction eg, pain, redness, edema, pruritus & inj site induration. Systemic reaction eg, little fever, chill, asphyxia, atony, giddy, arthralgia, muscle pain, GI disorder. Serious adverse reaction eg, rare anaphylaxis eg, tetter, nettle rash.
Drug Interactions
Ab produced can be affected by corticosteroid & immune inhibitor & can cause failed immunization.
