Silver sulfadiazine
Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis & treatment of infection in burns.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥2 mth After cleaning & debridement of wound, apply to the burned surface w/ a thickness of 1-3 mm. Usually applied once daily or bid to a thickness of approx 1.5 mm.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to silver sulfadiazine & sulfonamides. Pregnancy & lactation. Premature & newborn infants during 1st 2 mth of life (risk of kernicterus).
Special Precautions
Risk of fungal superinfection. Monitor blood counts. Patients w/ impaired renal & hepatic function. Application to large wound areas or over prolonged periods. Avoid application on open lesions especially ulcers. Maintain adequate fluid intake. Monitor presence of sulfa crystals in urine for patients w/ very extensive burns. Hydrotherapy & debridement should be performed daily to enhance rapid removal of eschars in patients w/ 3rd-degree burns. G6PD patients. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
Silver content may inactivate enzymatic debriding agents. Increased risk of leukopenia w/ cimetidine.
