Sevelamer carbonate
Indications/Uses
Control of serum P in adult & childn ≥6 yr w/ CKD on dialysis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adults not taking phosphate binder w/ serum P ≥7.5 mg/dL 1.6 g tid; >5.5 & <7.5 mg/dL 0.8 g tid. Dose may be titrated by 0.8 g tid at 2-wk intervals. Childn ≥6 yr not taking phosphate binder w/ BSA ≥0.75-<1.2 m2 0.8 g-1.6 g tid titrate by 0.4-0.8 g. Dialysis patients switching from Ca acetate (667 mg) to sevelamer carbonate 0.8-2.4 g.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Patients w/ hypophosphatemia or bowel obstruction.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ dysphagia, swallowing disorders, severe GI motility disorders including severe constipation, or major GI tract surgery. Monitor bicarbonate & Cl levels; reduced vit D, E, K (clotting factors) & folic acid levels.
Adverse Reactions
Vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, flatulence & constipation.
Drug Interactions
Decreased bioavailability of ciprofloxacin.
