Indications/Uses
Treatment of patients w/ serious cerebral injuries of vascular traumatic nature w/ or w/o loss of consciousness; degenerative damages & chronic cerebral vascular injuries in senile dementia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take w/ a glass of water. May take w/ food to prevent upset stomach.
Contraindications
Hypertonia; unconsciousness, brain surgery. Dosages at upper limit intake levels in patients w/ trimethylaminuria, Parkinson's disease, or kidney & liver disease.
Special Precautions
Do not co-administer w/ drugs containing centrophenoxine. Do not exceed 1,000 mg daily in case of persistent intracranial hemorrhage. May trigger existing epilepsy. Patients w/ history of depression. May produce side effects eg, resp depression; fishy odor; sweating & stunted growth. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hallucinations; headache, vertigo; HTN, hypotension; dyspnea; nausea, vomiting, occasional diarrhea; flushing, urticaria, rash, purpura; chills.
Drug Interactions
Decreased urinary excretion of carnitine in young adult women. Enhanced effect of choline in the brain w/ chronic treatment of lithium. Increased plasma conc of dopa. Diminished pools of all choline metabolites w/ MTX. Possible interaction w/ pentazocine. May intensify effects &/or toxicity w/ succinylcholine.
