Clomifene citrate
Indications/Uses
Ovulatory failure in women desiring pregnancy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
50 mg daily for 5 days, starting on or about the 5th day of menstrual cycle or at any time if there is amenorrhea. If ovulation does not occur, a course of 100 mg daily for 5 days may be given.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Patients w/ liver disease or history of liver dysfunction; hormone-dependent tumours; abnormal uterine bleeding of undetermined origin; presence of an ovarian cyst, except polycystic ovary. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Examine patients before starting treatment to exclude liver disease, pituitary or ovarian failure & neoplasms of the endometrium. Cause of infertility & any abnormal bleeding should be investigated. Possibility of multiple births. Prolonged courses of treatment are not recommended. Visual symptoms may occasionally occur during treatment. Ineffective in patients w/ primary pituitary or primary ovarian failure. Not a substitute for appropriate therapy of other conditions which may cause ovulatory dysfunctions (eg, thyroid or adrenal disease). Not a 1st line treatment for low wt-related amenorrhea w/ infertility; no value if high FSH blood level is observed following an early menopause. Record basal temp throughout all treatment cycles; discontinue therapy if pregnancy is suspected.
