Cefixime trihydrate
Indications/Uses
URTI eg, otitis media; lower resp tract infection eg, bronchitis; UTI eg, cystitis, cystourethritis, uncomplicated pyelonephritis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Course of treatment: 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if required. Adult & childn >10 yr or >50 kg 200-400 mg daily as single dose or in 2 divided doses. Elderly Adult dose may be given. Patient w/ CrCl <20 mL/min & those maintained on chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis Not to exceed 200 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ food or milk to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Discontinue use at 1st appearance of skin rash, mucosal lesions, or any other sign of skin hypersensitivity; if acute renal failure occurs. Predisposition to encephalopathy risk (including convulsions, confusion, impairment of consciousness, movement disorders). Hemolytic anemia. Antibiotic-associated colitis. Renal impairment. Not to be used in pregnancy or lactation. Not recommended in childn <10 yr. Childn <6 mth; premature or newborn infant.
Adverse Reactions
Eosinophilia, hypereosinophilia, agranulocytosis, leucopenia, neutropenia, granulocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, thrombocytosis; abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, flatulence; jaundice; pseudomembranous colitis, vaginitis; increased AST, ALT, blood bilirubin, blood urea & blood creatinine; dizziness, headache, convulsions, encephalopathy risk (including confusion, impairment of consciousness, movement disorders); dyspnea; acute renal failure w/ tubulointerstitial nephritis; anaphylactic reactions, angioedema, serum sickness-like reaction; DRESS, erythema multiforme, SJS, TEN, urticaria, rash, pruritus, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis; drug fever, arthralgia, pyrexia, face edema, genital pruritus.
Drug Interactions
Increased prothrombin time w/ anticoagulants. May enhance effects of coumarin-type anticoagulants (eg, warfarin K) & prolong prothrombin time w/ or w/o bleeding. False +ve reaction for glucose in urine w/ Benedict's or Fehling's soln or w/ Cu sulphate test tab; direct Coombs test.
