Cefaclor monohydrate
Indications/Uses
Resp tract infection, acute bronchitis & acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, UTI & skin & soft tissue infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Oral susp 125 mg/5 mL >5yr 2 tsp (10 mL) every 8 hr; 1-5 yr 1 tsp (5 mL) every 8 hr; <1 yr 1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) every 8 hr. 250 mg/5 mL >5 yr 1 tsp (5 mL) every 8 hr; 1-5 yr 1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) every 8 hr. Oral drops >1 mth 20 mg/kg in 3 divided doses, increased to 40 mg daily if necessary, not to exceed 1 g daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cefaclor or other cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. History of bleeding disorders, ulcerative colitis, regional enteritis or pseudomembranous colitis & other GI disease. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI effects (eg, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting), headache, rash.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid, bacteriostatic antibiotics & oral anticoagulants.
