Ursodeoxycholic acid
Indications/Uses
Dissolution of cholesterol-rich gallstones in patients w/ functioning gallbladders. Primary biliary cirrhosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Dissolution of cholesterol-rich gallstones 6-12 mg/kg daily as single bedtime dose or in 2 or 3 divided doses. Obese patient May require up to 15 mg/kg daily. Prevention of gallstones in patient undergoing rapid wt loss 300 mg bid. Primary biliary cirrhosis 10-15 mg/kg daily in 2-4 divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not to be given to patients w/ intestinal & hepatic disorders that interfere w/ entero-hepatic circulation of bile salts. Ineffective for the dissolution of calcified & pigment gallstones, & in patients w/o a patent & functioning gallbladder. Avoid use in pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, other GI disturbances; pruritus; calcification of cholesterol stones.
Drug Interactions
Do not use w/ drugs that increase bile cholesterol eg, oestrogenic hormones & cholesterol-lowering drugs eg, clofibrate. Reduced effectiveness of therapy w/ bile-acid binding drugs including antacids, charcoal, & colestyramine; avoid concomitant use.
