Clindamycin phosphate
Indications/Uses
Serious susceptible infections caused by gm +ve staphylococci, streptococci, pneumococci & anaerobic pathogens.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV/IM Adult Serious infections 600-1,200 mg daily in 2, 3 or 4 equal doses. More severe infections 1,200-2,700 mg daily in 2, 3 or 4 equal doses. Max: 4,800 mg IV daily. Childn <1 mth Serious infections 15-25 mg/kg daily in 3-4 equal doses. More infections 25-40 mg/kg daily in 3-4 equal doses.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin.
Special Precautions
Risk of fatal Gasping syndrome in premature infants due to benzyl alcohol content. History of GI disease especially colitis. Perform periodic liver & kidney function test during prolonged therapy. Super-infection may occur in prolonged use. Atopic individuals. Pregnancy & lactation. Neonates, infant <1 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Oesophageal ulcer, oesophagitis, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea; leucopenia, eosinophilia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia; anaphylactoid reactions; maculopapular rash, urticaria; pruritus, vaginitis; jaundice; LFTs abnormalities; dysgeusia; local irritation, pain, abscess formation (IM inj); thrombophlebitis (IV inj).
Drug Interactions
Enhanced action of other neuromuscular blockers. Antagonism w/ erythromycin (in vitro). Increased coagulation test (PT/INR) &/or bleeding w/ vit K antagonist (eg, warfarin, acenocoumarol & fluindione).
