Indications/Uses
Wide range of infections including anthrax, biliary tract, bone & joint, & lower resp tract infections, gastroenteritis (traveler's diarrhea), gonorrhoea & UTI. Prophylaxis for meningococcal meningitis & surgical infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 100-400 mg bid, given over 30-60 min. Childn 4-8 mg/kg bid. Exacerbation of cystic fibrosis associated w/ P. aeruginosa infection 10 mg/kg bid up to max of 400 mg bid.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Avoid use in patients who have or at risk for aortic aneurysm eg, patients w/ peripheral atherosclerotic vascular disease, HTN, Marfan & Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Patients w/ epilepsy or history of CNS disorders. Not to be used during pregnancy & lactation. Not generally recommended for other uses in childn & adolescents. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Haematological disturbance including haemolytic anemia, or agranulocytosis; headache, dizziness, restlessness, drowsiness, insomnia, nightmares & other sensory disturbances; GI disturbances including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, & dyspepsia; elevated liver enzyme values, jaundice & hepatitis; rash, pruritus, hypersensitivity-type reactions; myalgia & sweating, pain & irritation; anaphylaxis, transient increase in serum creatinine or BUN & occasionally acute renal failure, interstitial nephritis, & crystalluria.
Drug Interactions
Reduced absorption w/ Al, Mg or Fe. Decreased clearance of theophylline. Increased blood conc of midazolam. Reduced urinary excretion w/ probenecid. Higher & more prolonged conc w/ azlocillin. Interferes w/ metabolism of caffeine. Enhanced effects of oral anticoagulants (warfarin), glibenclamide, probenecid, metoclopramide & its derivatives.
