Description
Calcidin: Each Tablet contains: Calcium carbonate 1,500 mg (Equivalent to 600 mg elemental Calcium), Vitamin D3 200 IU.
Calcidin Plus: Each tablet contains: Vitamin D3, USP 10.00 mcg (equiv. to 400 IU Vit. D), Calcium Carbonate 1500 mg (equiv. to 600 elemental calcium).

Pharmacology: Calcidin: Pharmacodynamics: Mechanism of Action: Calcium carbonate is a calcium supplement that is used in deficiency states and as an adjunct in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble sterol, it aids in the regulation of calcium and phosphate homeostasis and bone mineralisation.
Pharmacokinetics: Absorption: Calcium carbonate: About 15-25% gets absorbed in the GI tract.
Converted to calcium chloride by gastric acid.
Vitamin D: Well-absorbed in the GI tract in the presence of bile.
Metabolism: Vitamin D: Undergoes hydroxylation in the liver and kidney to form the active metabolite, 1,25-dihydrocolecalciferol.
Excretion: Vitamin D and metabolites are mainly excreted in the bile and feces.
Indications/Uses
Calcidin: Nutritional supplement which helps in maintaining strong & healthy bones, prevent Ca deficiency & reduce risk of osteoporosis.
Calcidin Plus: It is used for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Calcidin: Recommended Usage: 1 tablet daily or as directed by a physician.
Calcidin Plus: Adult: Take one tablet twice a day with food or as prescribed by the physician.
Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as the patient remembers. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the patient's next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdosage
Calcidin Plus: Symptoms of overdose may include: constipation, nausea, vomiting, alkalosis, anorexia, milk-alkali syndrome, hypercalcemia, nephrolithiasis, and low level of phosphorus in the blood (hypophosphatemia).
In case of accidental overdose, discontinue use and seek professional assistance immediately.
Contraindications
Calcidin Plus: If the patient is allergic to calcium, vitamin D or any other components of the product.
If the patient has an abnormally high level of calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia) and/or hypercalciuria (e.g. overactive parathyroid glands, a disease of bone marrow (myeloma), a malignant bone tumor (bone metastasis).
If the patient is suffering from kidney failure.
If the patient is suffering from kidney stones or has calcium deposits in the kidneys.
If the patient is suffering from an excessive supply of Vitamin D (hypervitaminosis D).
Special Precautions
Calcidin Plus: In the case of long-term treatment with Vitamin D + Calcium, the quantity of calcium in the blood must be regularly monitored. This monitoring is particularly important in the elderly and where treatment is being taken at the same time as cardiac glycosides or diuretics. Depending on the result, the doctor may decide to reduce or even stop the treatment.
The patient should take the tablet with a large glass of water (200 mL). If the patient is more than 65 years old or have difficulties to swallow, the patient should divide the breakable tablet in two parts and take the tablet with a large glass of water (200 mL).
Consult a doctor: When the patient takes more vitamin D + Calcium than the patient should, talk to a doctor.
If the patient gets any side effects, talk to the doctor.
Adverse Reactions
Calcidin: Some of the possible side effects of Calcidin include allergic reactions, nausea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth, muscle pain or bone pain.
Calcidin Plus: The following may be associated with the use of Vitamin D/Calcium: Abdominal distention, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, eructation/burping, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, high level of calcium in blood (hypercalcemia), excessive loss of calcium in urine (hypercalciuria) and kidney stone formation (nephrolithiasis).
Drug Interactions
Calcidin Plus: Make sure the doctor knows if the patient is also using other supplements or medicines that contain calcium. Calcium can change the way the other medicines work if the patient takes them at the same time. If the patient needs to use other medicines, take them at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking the calcium supplement. This is particularly important if the patient is also using phenytoin or tetracycline antibiotic to treat an infection (such as doxycycline, minocycline), fluoroquinolone antibiotics, and levothyroxine (thyroid medication).
Do not take the calcium supplement with a high-fiber meal (such as bran, whole-grain cereal or bread, fresh fruits).
Do not smoke cigarettes or cigars and do not drink large amounts of alcohol or caffeine (for example, more than about 8 cups of coffee).
Storage
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
