Mupirocin.
Description
Mupirocin (Bactroban) is an off-white, smooth, easily spread ointment.
What Mupirocin (Bactroban) contains: The active substance is mupirocin.
Each gram of Mupirocin (Bactroban) contains 20 mg/g (2% w/w) mupirocin.
Excipients/Inactive Ingredients: The other ingredients are: Polyethylene glycol 400; Polyethylene glycol 3350.
Indications/Uses
Mupirocin (Bactroban) is an antibiotic. It is used to prevent or treat skin infections caused by bacteria.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Use Mupirocin (Bactroban) two or three times a day for up to ten days.
Always use Mupirocin (Bactroban) exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Check with the doctor or pharmacist if not sure.
If the patient forgets to use Mupirocin (Bactroban): Apply Mupirocin (Bactroban) as soon as remembered and apply the next dose at the usual time.
Overdosage
If the patient uses too much Mupirocin (Bactroban): Carefully wipe off the extra ointment. Problems with overdosage with this medicine are unlikely.
If the patient accidentally swallowed Mupirocin (Bactroban), contact the doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Contraindications
Don't use Mupirocin (Bactroban): if the patient is allergic (hypersensitive) to mupirocin or any other ingredients of Mupirocin (Bactroban) (listed in Description).
If the patient thinks this may apply, don't use Mupirocin (Bactroban) until the patient has checked with the doctor.
Special Precautions
Take special care with Mupirocin (Bactroban): Mupirocin (Bactroban) can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. See Side Effects.
Mupirocin (Bactroban) ointment is not suitable for: eye infections; use inside the nose; skin near tubes inserted into the body for the delivery or removal of fluid (cannulae).
Keep the ointment away from the eyes. If the ointment gets into the eyes accidentally, wash them thoroughly with water.
Mupirocin (Bactroban) ointment contains polyethylene glycol, which in large quantities can cause kidney damage. Avoid applying Mupirocin (Bactroban) to large areas of broken or damaged skin, especially if the patient has problems with the kidneys.
Don't stop Mupirocin (Bactroban) without advice: It is important that the patient takes the full course of Mupirocin (Bactroban). Don't stop early as the symptoms may disappear before the infection is fully cleared.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
There is only limited information about the safety of Mupirocin (Bactroban) in pregnant women. If the patient is pregnant, or thinks the patient could be, or if the patient is planning to become pregnant, don't apply Mupirocin (Bactroban) without checking with the doctor.
It is not known whether the ingredients of Mupirocin (Bactroban) can pass into breast milk. If the patient is breast-feeding, the patient must check with the doctor before applying Mupirocin (Bactroban).
If the patient is using Mupirocin (Bactroban) on a cracked nipple, wash the nipple well before breast-feeding the baby.
Side Effects
Conditions the patient need to look out for: Severe allergic reactions.
These are very rare in people applying Mupirocin (Bactroban). Signs include: raised and itchy rash; swelling, sometimes of the face or mouth, causing difficulty in breathing; collapse or loss of consciousness.
Contact a doctor immediately if the patient gets any of these symptoms. Stop using Mupirocin (Bactroban).
Mupirocin (Bactroban) can cause skin irritation.
If the patient gets skin irritation, stop using Mupirocin (Bactroban). Wipe off any ointment and tell the doctor as soon as possible.
On rare occasions, medicines like Mupirocin (Bactroban) can cause inflammation of the colon (large intestine), causing diarrhoea, usually with blood and mucus, stomach pain, fever (pseudomembranous colitis).
Tell the doctor as soon as possible if the patient gets any of these symptoms.
Common side effects: These may affect up to 1 in 10 people: burning at the place where the ointment is applied.
Uncommon side effects: These may affect up to 1 in 100 people: itching, redness, stinging and/or dryness on the skin in the place where the ointment is applied.
Very rare side effects: These may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people: Allergic reactions.
If the patient gets side effects: Tell the doctor or pharmacist if any of the side effects listed becomes severe or troublesome, or if the patient notices any side effects not listed in this monograph.
Drug Interactions
Other medicines and Mupirocin (Bactroban): Tell the doctor or pharmacist if the patient is taking any other medicines, if the patient has taken any recently, or if the patient starts taking new ones. This includes medicines the patient bought without a prescription.
Caution For Usage
How to use: Wash hands before and after applying Mupirocin (Bactroban).
With a piece of clean cotton wool or a gauze swab, apply a small quantity of Mupirocin (Bactroban) ointment to cover the affected area.
After applying the ointment, the patient may cover the treated area with a sterile bandage or gauze dressing, unless the doctor has told the patient to leave it uncovered.
Don't mix Mupirocin (Bactroban) with other lotions, creams or ointments. This may dilute Mupirocin (Bactroban), which may affect the treatment.
Storage
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
Dispose of any Mupirocin (Bactroban) remaining at the end of treatment.
Don't dispose of the medicine in wastewater or household rubbish. Ask the pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required.
