Special Precautions
Take special care with Mupirocin (Bactroban): Mupirocin (Bactroban) can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. See Side Effects.
Mupirocin (Bactroban) ointment is not suitable for: eye infections; use inside the nose; skin near tubes inserted into the body for the delivery or removal of fluid (cannulae).
Keep the ointment away from the eyes. If the ointment gets into the eyes accidentally, wash them thoroughly with water.
Mupirocin (Bactroban) ointment contains polyethylene glycol, which in large quantities can cause kidney damage. Avoid applying Mupirocin (Bactroban) to large areas of broken or damaged skin, especially if the patient has problems with the kidneys.
Don't stop Mupirocin (Bactroban) without advice: It is important that the patient takes the full course of Mupirocin (Bactroban). Don't stop early as the symptoms may disappear before the infection is fully cleared.
