Flagyl IV

Urethritis & vaginitis. Intestinal & hepatic amoebiasis. Giardiasis. Prevention of post-op anaerobic infections.

IV infusion Treatment of infections in which bacteria have been identified Adult 500 mg every 8 hr. Childn 7.5 mg/kg every 8 hr. Prevention of post-op abdominal infections, gynaecology Adult 500 mg pre-op, followed by 500 mg orally every 8 hr. Childn 7.5 mg/kg (1.5 mL/kg) every 8 hr.

Hypersensitivity to imidazoles. First trimester of pregnancy.

Patients w/ CNS & hepatic diseases; Cockayne syndrome. Perform hematological tests in prolonged administration. Alcoholism. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Severe hepatotoxicity or acute hepatic failure. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.

Epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, oral mucositis, taste disorders, anorexia, reversible pancreatitis, tongue discoloration/furry tongue; angioedema, anaphylactic shock; peripheral sensory neuropathy, headache, convulsions, dizziness, encephalopathy (eg, confusion, fever, headache, hallucinations, paralysis, light sensitivity, disturbances in sight & movement, stiff neck) & subacute cerebellar syndrome (eg, ataxia, dysarthria, gait impairment, nystagmus & tremor), aseptic meningitis; psychotic disorders including confusion, hallucinations, depressed mood; transient vision disorders ie, diplopia, myopia, blurred vision, decreased visual acuity, changes in color vision, optic neuropathy/neuritis; agranulocytosis, neutropenia & thrombocytopenia; increase in liver enzymes (AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase), cholestatic or mixed hepatitis & hepatocellular liver injury, liver failure; rash, pruritus, flushing, urticaria, pustular eruptions, erythema multiforme; fever.

Prolonged prothrombin time w/ warfarin & coumarin. Cimetidine might prolong metronidazole plasma clearance. Concomitant use w/ disulfiram & alcohol may cause psychotic reaction. Reduced clearance of 5-fluorouracil. Increased plasma levels of busulfan.
