Ofloxacin.
Description
Each mL contains: Ofloxacin 3 mg.
Excipients/Inactive Ingredients: Preservative: Benzalkonium Chloride 0.005%.
Action
Pharmacology: Ofloxacin has bacteriostatic activity especially against Gram negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter aerogenes, Proteus and Klebsiella sp. By inhibiting bacterial cell protein synthesis, as well as sensitive strains of Staphylococci including S. aureus and S. epidermidis (positive coagulase and negative coagulase including Penicillin-resistant strains). Streptococci includes several non-haemolytic species and several streptococcus pneumoniae species.
Indications/Uses
For the treatment of corneal ulcers and conjunctivitis caused by strains of sensitive bacteria.
Dosage/Direction for Use
1-2 drops every 4-6 hours. The dosage can be increased 1-2 drops every 2 hours for the first 24 to 48 hours. Then the frequency must be gradually reduced according to signs of clinical improvement.
Contraindications
Patients with hypersensitivity to Ofloxacin, to other quinolones, or to any of the components in this medication.
Do not use together with antibiotics such as topical beta-lactam antibiotics, it can cause the inactivation of Ofloxacin.
Warnings
Special warning and special precaution for use: Benzalkonium Chloride, which is commonly used as preservative in ophthalmic products, has been reported to cause punctate keratopathy and/or toxic ulcerative keratopathy. Since this drug contains Benzalkonium Chloride, close monitoring is required in frequent or prolonged use in dry eye patients, or with sensitive corneal conditions.
Contact lenses: Patients should be advised not to wear contact lenses if their eye is red. This drug should not be used to treat contact lenses-related irritation. The preservative in this drug, Benzalkonium Chloride, may be absorbed by contact lenses. Patients who wear contact lenses and whose eyes are not red should be instructed to wait at least 10 minutes after instilling this drug before they insert their contact lenses.
Special Precautions
Avoid long usage because it can cause growth of insensitive organisms including fungi, which can cause superinfection.
If a reaction is thought to be a hypersensitive reaction, the treatment must be stopped.
Sensitive reactions can occur in some patients. If this happens stop using the drug.
Because it has the potential to cause adverse reactions for mothers who breastfeed, you should stop breastfeeding or stop using the drug.
Do not use medication during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary.

Adverse Reactions
Side effects that often occur with Ofloxacin are pain, itching, and redness on the conjunctiva. The same reaction can occur in the use of other aminoglycoside antibiotics. If topical ofloxacin for the eye is used with systemic aminoglycoside antibiotics the total serum level must always be monitored. Other reactions that have been reported are: Chemical conjunctivities/keratitis ocular/particular/facial edema, foreign body sensation, photophobia, blurred vision, tearing, dryness, and pain in the eyes. A rare reaction: dizziness.
Storage
Store below 30°C, away from light.
Use within 4 weeks after opening.
