Indications and Dosage
Vaginal
Contraception
Adult: As a barrier spermicidal contraceptive: Alone or in conjunction with barrier methods of contraception (e.g. diaphragms or caps): As 28% film: Insert 1 film into the vagina at least 15 minutes to <3 hours before the intercourse; insert new film for each act of intercourse. As 1,000 mg sponge: Insert 1 sponge into the vagina prior to intercourse; allow to remain in place for 6 hours after intercourse. Do not leave in place for >30 hours.
Contraindications
Patient with HIV/AIDS or those whose sexual partner is infected with HIV/AIDS. Sponge: History of toxic shock syndrome; within 6 weeks after giving birth; during menstrual period.
Special Precautions
Patient who had a recent miscarriage or an abortion or with vaginal or uterine condition (e.g. vaginal septum or uterine prolapse), multiple sex partners, new partner, or unprotected sex (sponge). Nonoxinol 9 does not provide protection against HIV infection or other STDs; use may increase the risk of acquiring HIV from an infected sexual partner. Pregnancy and lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Significant: Vaginal irritation (e.g. burning, itching, rash).
Potentially Fatal: Rarely, toxic shock syndrome (sponge).
Action
Description:
Mechanism of Action: Nonoxinol 9, a nonionic surfactant, damages the cell membrane of the sperm, causing a rapid loss of motility and function, which leads to sperm death. This action results in the prevention of pregnancy.

Store between 15-30°C.
