Nonoxinol 9 is a contraceptive (birth control) that works by killing the sperm.
This medicine is used along with other methods of contraception such as vaginal diaphragm or cap to prevent pregnancy in women of reproductive age.
Use Nonoxinol 9 as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine is available as a film or sponge.
If you have been given the film, follow these steps:
- Make sure your fingers are dry before handling the film.
- Choose the position you're comfortable with. You may lie on your back with both knees bent and legs apart. You may also stand up with one leg up or squat.
- Insert 1 film as far as you can reach into the vagina.
- Insert at least 15 minutes, but no more than 3 hours, before sexual contact.
- An additional film must be used before each sexual contact, regardless of the time since the last application.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after application.
If you have been given the sponge, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Wet the sponge thoroughly with clean water. Squeeze gently until it becomes very sudsy.
- With the dimpled side facing inward, fold the sponge.
- Choose the position you're comfortable with. You may lie on your back with both knees bent and legs apart. You may also stand up with one leg up or squat.
- Hold the string loop at the bottom and gently push the sponge as far as you can reach into the vagina. Do this up to, but not more than, 24 hours before sexual contact.
- Keep the sponge inside for at least 6 hours after your last sexual contact. Do not leave it in for longer than 30 hours.
- Do not reuse the sponge. Insert a new sponge before each sexual contact.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after application.
Alert your doctor if you or your partner has HIV infection or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) as Nonoxinol 9 may not be suitable for you.
Do not use Nonoxinol 9 sponge if you have the following conditions:
- history of toxic shock syndrome (a condition caused by a bacterial infection)
- within 6 weeks after giving birth
- menstrual period
If you are using Nonoxinol 9 sponge, inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- recent miscarriage or abortion
- vaginal problems
- new or multiple partners
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Nonoxinol 9 does not lower the risk of getting HIV infection or any other sexually transmitted diseases. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid getting these diseases.
Nonoxinol 9 may cause any of the following side effects: vaginal pain, discomfort, itching, burning, rash, and redness.
If you experience diarrhoea, dizziness, passing out, fever, muscle pain, upset stomach, vomiting, or a sunburn-like rash while using Nonoxinol 9 sponge, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of toxic shock syndrome.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
