Praziquantel is used to treat parasitic worm infections that may affect the blood or liver.
This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Praziquantel exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take this medicine together with food or immediately after a meal.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. If necessary, your doctor may ask you to take half or a quarter of a tablet. Do not chew the divided portion of the tablet.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the course of treatment depending on the type of your infection.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not take Praziquantel if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
Alert your doctor if you have a parasitic worm infection in the eyes as this medicine may not be suitable for you.
Do not take Praziquantel with rifampicin (medicine used to treat TB [lung infection known as tuberculosis]).
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- heart problems
- history of epilepsy (fits or seizures)
- liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
- Examination of your stool or urine for the presence of parasites or eggs must be done to check if Praziquantel is suited for you to take.
- Routine test (e.g. liver function) may be done while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have this test.
- Regular monitoring of signs of heart problems and seizures, may also be needed.
Praziquantel may cause drowsiness or dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: headache, dizziness with sensations of spinning, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, tiredness, loss of appetite, fever, muscle pain, and rash.
If you develop a slow, abnormal or irregular heartbeat, inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of heart problems.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Praziquantel with rifampicin (medicine used to treat TB [lung infection known as tuberculosis]).
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizures) e.g. phenobarbital, phenytoin
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. efavirenz, ritonavir
- medicines to treat fungal infection e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole
- anti-inflammatory medicines e.g. dexamethasone
- certain antibiotics (e.g. erythromycin)
- chloroquine (medicine for malaria, a disease transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito)
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Avoid excessive consumption of grapefruit or grapefruit juice (more than 1 litre a day).
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
