Montelukast Na
Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis & chronic treatment of asthma in adults & ped ≥6 yr, including prevention of day & nighttime symptoms; aspirin-sensitive asthmatic patients, & prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Relief of seasonal & perennial allergic rhinitis in adults & ped ≥6 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Asthma &/or allergic rhinitis Adult ≥15 yr One 10-mg tab daily. Childn 6-14 yr One 5-mg chewable tab daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not for acute asthma attacks including status asthmaticus. Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Neuropsychiatric events. Eosinophilia, vasculitic rash, worsening pulmonary symptoms, cardiac complications, &/or neuropathy. Avoid concomitant aspirin or NSAIDs in patients w/ known aspirin sensitivity. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Agitation including aggressive behavior or hostility, anxiousness, depression, disorientation, attention disturbance, dream abnormalities, drowsiness, hallucinations, hypoesthesia, insomnia, irritability, memory impairment, paresthesia, restlessness, seizures, somnambulism, suicidal thinking & behavior including suicide, tremor; erythema multiforme & nodosum, pruritus, SJS/TEN, urticaria; diarrhea, dyspepsia, nausea, pancreatitis, vomiting; increased bleeding tendency, systemic eosinophilia, vasculitis w/ Churg-Strauss syndrome, thrombocytopenia; cholestatic hepatitis, hepatocellular & mixed-pattern liver injury; angioedema, hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis; arthralgia, myalgia including muscle cramps; bruising, edema, enuresis in childn, epistaxis, hepatic eosinophilic infiltration, palpitations, pulmonary eosinophilia.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ loxapine. Increased loxapine levels/effects. Increased levels/effects w/ gemfibrozil. Decreased levels/effects w/ lumacaftor.
