Equine anti-rabies Ig fragments
Indications/Uses
Passive immunization against rabies. Prevention of rabies in patients at risk of being exposed to rabies after contact w/ rabid animal or animal presumed to be rabid. Use in conjunction w/ rabies vaccine.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SC/IM Adult & childn 40 IU/kg. As much as possible, infiltrate the dose around the wounds. The remainder should be administered IM (into gluteal region) in a single dose.
Contraindications
History of allergic symptoms or hypersensitivity to horse serum.
Special Precautions
Perform skin test before administration. +ve skin test result should be considered as warning, whereas -ve skin test does not guarantee anaphylaxis would not occur. Administer only after ensuring the facility is equipped to overcome anaphylactic shock.
Adverse Reactions
Immediate reactions eg, anaphylactoid reactions w/ hypotension, dyspnea, urticaria. Delayed reactions eg, inflammatory reaction, fever, pruritis, rash or urticaria, adenopathy & arthralgia.
Drug Interactions
Not to administer antiserum in the same syringe as the vaccine.
