Desogestrel
Dosage/Direction for Use
1 tab daily from 1st day of period w/o interruption for 28 days. May start on days 2-5 of cycle but w/ additional contraceptive method (barrier method) for the 1st 7 days. Changing from combined pill, vag ring or transdermal patch Start on the day after the last active tab, or on the day of vag ring or patch removal, w/o the need to take extra contraceptive precautions. May also start at the latest day following tab-, ring-, patch-free break or placebo tab interval of present contraceptive & use additional barrier method during 1st cycle for 1st 7 days of tab taking. Changing from another progestogen-only pill (mini-pill) Start taking the tab right away after stopping the mini-pill. Changing from injectable, implant or progestogen-releasing IUD Start when the next inj is due, or the day the implant or IUD is removed. Women who recently gave birth Start between 21-28 days after delivery. If started later, use additional contraceptive method (barrier method) during 1st cycle for the 1st 7 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take at the same time each day. Swallow whole w/ water.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Thrombosis (eg, DVT, pulmonary embolism); sex steroids-sensitive cancer (eg, certain types of breast cancer); unexplained vag bleeding. History of jaundice or severe liver disease. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Not for protection against HIV infection (AIDS) or any other STD. Patients w/ history of breast cancer or thrombosis; history or current chloasma; liver cancer; diabetes; epilepsy; TB; high BP. Decreased bone mass. Heavy or prolonged vag bleeding; ovarian cysts. Immobilisation; scheduled surgery. Avoid excessive sun or UV exposure. Regularly check breast for lump. Intolerance to some sugars eg, lactose. Not to be used during pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy. Lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Altered mood, decreased sexual drive (libido); headache; nausea; acne; breast pain, irregular or no menstruation; increased body wt.
Drug Interactions
Reduced efficacy w/ primidone, phenytoin, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, felbamate, topiramate, phenobarb; rifampicin, rifabutin; ritonavir, nelfinavir, nevirapine, efavirenz; boceprevir, telaprevir; griseofulvin; bosentan; medical charcoal; St. John's wort. Increased effect of cyclosporine. Decrease effect of lamotrigine.
