Ulipristal is an emergency contraceptive. This medicine is used to prevent pregnancy after an unprotected sex or if there is a failure from your usual contraceptive.
This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Ulipristal exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food.
If you vomit within 3 hours of taking Ulipristal, inform your doctor immediately.
Ulipristal must be taken within 5 days after you had an unprotected sex or if you had a contraceptive failure.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you forget to take Ulipristal after an unprotected sex or contraception failure, let your doctor know.
Do not take Ulipristal if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. This medicine may cause harm to your unborn child. You must use proven birth control methods each time you have sex until your next menstrual period after taking Ulipristal.
Do not breastfeed after taking this medicine.
Ulipristal is for emergency contraception only. Do not take it as a regular birth control method. You may discuss other birth control methods with your doctor or pharmacist.
Ulipristal does not lower the risk of getting HIV infection or any other sexually transmitted diseases. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid getting these diseases.
Pregnancy tests must be done before treatment to know if this medicine is suited for you to take. In addition, pregnancy test must be done if menstruation is delayed for more than 7 days of the expected menstrual period after treatment with this medicine.
Ulipristal may cause dizziness, suddenly falling asleep during daily activities, or blurred vision. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert or need to see clearly.
Other side effects include any of the following: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or discomfort, indigestion, diarrhoea, dry mouth, tiredness, body pain, muscle pain, and hot flush.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- unusual changes in mood or behaviour (being too depressed, agitated, or having compulsive and impulsive behaviour)
- unexplained vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizures) e.g. carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin
- medicines for TB (lung infection known as tuberculosis) e.g. rifampicin, rifabutin
- medicines for HIV infection e.g. efavirenz, nevirapine, ritonavir
- certain antibiotics e.g. erythromycin, clarithromycin
- medicines to treat fungal infection e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole
- birth control pills
- medicines that reduces stomach acid production
- bosentan medicine used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the blood vessels leading to the lungs)
- St. John’s wort (herbal medicine)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Ulipristal.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
