Tazarotene is used to treat acne (also known as pimple) and plaque psoriasis (a type of skin disease that allows the skin cells to rapidly build up causing itchy patches of thick, red skin and silvery scales).
This medicine is also used together with proper skin care and sunlight avoidance programme to reduce fine facial wrinkles and certain types of dark or light spots on the face.
Apply Tazarotene exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more often or over a larger area than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine is available as a cream, gel, lotion, or a foam.
If you are using cream, gel or lotion, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry the affected area before application.
- Apply a thin layer to the affected area(s) and rub gently on the skin until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
- Replace the cap of the tube.
If you are using foam, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean and dry the affected area before application.
- Shake the can well before use, then remove the cap.
- Hold the can upright at a slight tilt and press the nozzle to put a small amount of foam in your palm.
- Use the fingertips of your other hand to apply a thin layer that will cover the affected area(s) and rub it gently on the skin until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
- Wash your hands after using.
Avoid contact with your eyes, nose or mouth. Rinse immediately with water if Tazarotene gets into these areas. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes.
Do not use with occlusive dressing unless instructed by the doctor.
Your doctor will also discuss the use of this medicine as different brands and preparations of Tazarotene may only be used for a specific condition.
Do not use this medicine for any conditions other than what is prescribed by your doctor.
The dose of Tazarotene will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your condition and your response to the medication.
Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens during treatment.
If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you often forget to apply your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while being treated with Tazarotene, alert your doctor immediately. This medicine may cause harm to your unborn child. You must use proven birth control methods while using Tazarotene.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- personal or family history of skin cancer
- eczema (a skin condition characterised by patches of red and itchy skin)
- sensitivity to sunlight
- a job that requires you to spend long periods of time under the sun
Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Tazarotene to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Do not apply on skin that is scraped, broken, or sunburned.
Certain factors such as dry and cold weather, stress, trauma to the skin, infections, alcohol, and smoking can trigger or worsen psoriasis. Take good care of your skin by keeping it clean, moisturised and free from cuts and infections. Avoid going out during dry and cold weather. Learn to manage your stress, avoid alcohol, and quit smoking. Regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight are also good for your overall health and wellness.
This medicine in its various forms can be flammable. Avoid exposure of the medicine to fire and flames or smoking during and immediately after application on your skin.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
Pregnancy tests must be done before treatment, to know if this medicine is suited for you to use.
Tazarotene may cause any of the following side effects: skin irritation and redness, dryness, burning sensation, or peeling on the application site.
This medicine may also make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing when going outdoors and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are using any medicines or products that may dry the skin or increase your sensitivity to sunlight.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Do not freeze the foam and lotion.
Tazarotene foam can be flammable. Avoid exposure of this medicine to fire and open flames.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
