Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis & chronic treatment of asthma including prevention of day- & night-time symptoms in adult & ped patient ≥2 yr, treatment of aspirin-sensitive asthmatic patients & prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Symptomatic relief of day- & night-time allergic rhinitis in adult & ped patient ≥2 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult ≥15 yr Asthma 10 mg once daily taken in the evening. Allergic rhinitis 10 mg once daily. Time of administration may be individualized to suit patient needs. Asthma & allergic rhinitis 10 mg once daily taken in the evening.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Avoid concomitant use w/ aspirin or NSAIDs in patients w/ known aspirin hypersensitivity. Do not use to treat acute asthma attacks & as monotherapy for the treatment & management of exercise-induced bronchospasm. Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Possible neuropsychiatric events in patients w/ & w/o history of psychiatric disorder; advise patients &/or caregivers to be alert for behavioural changes or new neuropsychiatric symptoms when taking montelukast. Possible Churg-Strauss syndrome. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain, headache; thirst; diarrhea, hyperkinesia, asthma, eczematous dermatitis & rash; somnolence; potentially, suicidal ideation.
Drug Interactions
Decreased AUC w/ phenobarb. Increased systemic exposure w/ gemfibrozil.
