Delafloxacin - Oral

Why do I need this medicine?
Delafloxacin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the lungs, skin, and tissue under the skin.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Delafloxacin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take this medicine with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type of your infection.

Take Delafloxacin at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
If you miss a dose and it is 8 or more hours before the next dose is due, take the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

If it is less than 8 hours before the next dose is due, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take Delafloxacin if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or similar antibiotics such as ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin.

Alert your doctor if you have a history of tendon problems, including tendinitis (inflammation of the tendons) related to previous use of Delafloxacin, as this medicine may not be suitable for you.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • aortic aneurysm (weakness and bulging of the wall in the major blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart)
  • aortic dissection (tear in the wall of the major blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart)
  • current or family history of heart valve disease
  • inherited problems of the tissues that connect the organs in the body
  • high blood pressure
  • rheumatoid arthritis (inflammation in the joints of fingers, wrist, feet, and ankles)
  • diabetes
  • G6PD deficiency (an inherited blood disorder where the body lacks a certain enzyme necessary for the proper functioning of red blood cells)
  • history of or risk factors for depression
  • known history of myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness disorder)
  • epilepsy (fits or seizures)
  • kidney disease
  • received a solid organ transplant
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to the elderly. Elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.

For as long as you are taking Delafloxacin, you may need to have regular blood tests (e.g. kidney function, white blood cell count) to check your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have blood tests.
What side effects could I experience?
Delafloxacin may cause dizziness or blurred vision. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert or need to see clearly.

Other side effects include any of the following: headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, changes in taste, difficulty sleeping, flushing, and itching.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • signs and symptoms of allergic reaction e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swelling of the face, eyes or mouth
  • signs and symptoms of aortic aneurysm or dissection e.g. irregular or abnormal heartbeat, shortness of breath, sudden severe pain in the abdomen, chest or back
  • worsening muscle weakness
  • numbness, pain, tingling or burning sensation in the arms, hands, legs or feet
  • fits or seizures
  • unusual changes in mood or behaviour (being too depressed, feeling confused, seeing, hearing or feeling things that are not existent)
  • pain, swelling, or bruising in the back of the ankle, hands, shoulder or other joints, inability to move or bear weight on the joint, or a feeling of a snap or pop
  • shaky hands, unusual hunger or thirst, fruity smell breath, feeling weak or confused, passing urine more often, sweating, weakness
  • severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps or bloody stools
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory medicines).

This medicine should not be taken with sucralfate (medicine used to treat ulcer in the small intestine), antacids (medicines that neutralise stomach acids) containing magnesium or aluminium, and multivitamins containing iron, zinc or calcium. These medicines may reduce the effectiveness of Delafloxacin. If you must take them, take Delafloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after you have taken these medicines.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
