Why do I need this medicine?
Carbocisteine and Promethazine are combined in this medicine.

Carbocisteine + Promethazine helps relieve an irritating cough that does not produce phlegm and typically occurs at night.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Carbocisteine + Promethazine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Try to take it at the same time each day.

Carbocisteine + Promethazine is available as a syrup. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

You may stop taking this medicine when you have no more cough.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • active peptic ulcer (open sores in the lining of the stomach, small intestine, or lower food pipe)
  • active or history of agranulocytosis (low count of a certain type of white blood cell called neutrophils)
as Carbocisteine + Promethazine may not be suitable for you.

Do not give this medicine to children below 2 years old unless instructed by the doctor, or to individuals who are in a coma (a state of loss of consciousness for a long period of time) or have slow function of the brain and spinal cord.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • bone marrow depression (a condition in which the blood cells are low)
  • heart or blood vessel problems
  • history of fits or seizures
  • head injuries
  • alcohol addiction
  • slow bowel movement or blocked bowel or stomach
  • dry mouth
  • vision problems
  • increased pressure in the eye
  • enlarged prostate gland
  • blockage of urine flow
  • myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness disorder)
  • Parkinson's disease (disorder that affects the movement of a person, causing symptoms such as tremors, muscle stiffness, slowed movement and impaired balance or walking)
  • severe lung disease e.g. asthma, sleep apnoea (sleep disorder that causes interrupted breathing during sleep), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (a long-term lung disease that causes airflow obstruction making it hard to breathe)
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Carbocisteine + Promethazine to a child aged 2 years old and above or the elderly. Children and elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.

This medicine may affect the ability of your body to maintain its internal temperature within the normal range. Discuss with your doctor if you frequently need to exercise, participate in any activity, or work in a hot environment.

If you are going to have certain laboratory tests (e.g. pregnancy test, skin test, blood sugar tests), inform your doctor that you are taking Carbocisteine + Promethazine.
What side effects could I experience?
Carbocisteine + Promethazine may cause drowsiness or dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

This medicine may cause your blood pressure to fall suddenly when you get up from a sitting or lying down position and you may feel giddy. To minimise this problem, stand up slowly.

This medicine may also make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Apply sunscreen when going outdoors and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.

Other side effects include any of the following: headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain or discomfort, confusion, and memory or concentration problems.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • high fever, muscle cramps or stiffness, severe headache, fast or abnormal heartbeat, excessive sweating
  • problems controlling body movements, change in balance, trouble speaking or swallowing, twitching
  • difficulty in passing urine
  • frequent sore throat, mouth sores, chills or sweating
  • slow, shallow or ineffective breathing
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark coloured urine
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • medicines that cause drowsiness or affect your concentration
  • medicines to treat depression
  • sultopride (medicine for mood disorders)
  • medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizures)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Carbocisteine + Promethazine.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol. Alcohol intake may worsen the dizziness and drowsiness caused by Carbocisteine + Promethazine.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Protect from light.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
