Ketorolac trometamol
Indications/Uses
Short-term management of moderately severe, acute pain at the opioid level. Post-op pain after general, orthopedic, gynecological & dental operation. In ped patients (≥2 yr), severe post-op pain that requires analgesia at opioid level.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 10 mg IV/IM. Maintenance: 10-30 mg 4-6 hrly. Childn ≥2 yr 0.5-1 mg/kg as a single IV inj. May repeat 0.5 mg/kg 6 hrly, if necessary, after 0.5-1 mg/kg single dose & therapy should not exceed 2 days. Elderly, renal failure, patient <50 kg Daily dose should not exceed 60 mg. Max duration: 5 days.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ketorolac trometamol, aspirin or other NSAIDs. History of peptic ulcer, ulcer or perforation; GI bleeding; hemorrhagic diathesis; suspected or confirmed cerebrovascular bleeding; bronchial asthma; hypovolemia or dehydration; nasal polyp, vascular edema or bronchial convulsion; patients who took surgery w/ incomplete hemostasis or at high risk of bleeding. Concomitant use of NSAIDs, anticoagulants, pentoxifylline, probenecid or lithium. Patients taken tonsillectomy. Prophylaxis before major surgery; moderate or severe renal failure (serum creatinine >160 mol/L). Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <2 yr.
Special Precautions
History of renal disorder, hepatic or GI disease. HTN, cardiac decompensation, hypovolemia, dehydration or receiving diuretics, CHF, history of GI disease, active GI, asthma, nasal polyps; patients w/ coagulation haemorrhage disorder. Patients who consume more than 3 cups of alcohol; another antipyretic analgesic. Start treatment as IM/IV then change to PO. Total therapy should not exceed 5 days. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, dyspepsia, GI pain, diarrhea.
