Indications/Uses
Susceptible infections eg, bone & joint infections, lower resp tract infections, skin infections, & UTI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
By deep IM inj, slow IV inj over 3-5 min, or IV infusion. Adult 750 mg every 8 hr. Severe infection 1.5 g IV every 6-8 hr for 5-10 days. Infant & childn 30-60 mg/kg/day, may be increased to 100 mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses. Neonate Same total daily dose as childn but in 2-3 divided doses.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or cephalosporin antibiotics. History of severe hypersensitivity (eg, anaphylactic reaction) to any other type of β-lactam antibacterial agent (penicillins, monobactams & carbapenems).
Special Precautions
Not suitable for treatment of infections caused by gm -ve non-fermenting bacteria. Not formulated for intracameral use. Discontinue immediately in case of severe hypersensitivity reactions. Caution in patients w/ history of non-severe hypersensitivity to other β-lactam agents & in patients who have experienced anaphylactic reaction to penicillin. May result in overgrowth of Candida, & prolonged use may result in overgrowth of other non-susceptible microorganisms (eg, enterococci & Clostridium difficile) which may require interruption of treatment. Reports of mild to life-threatening antibacterial agent-associated pseudomembranous colitis. Medicinal products that inhibit peristalsis should not be given. Caution when co-administering cephalosporins at high dosage w/ potent diuretics (eg, furosemides) or aminoglycosides. Development of +ve Coombs' test may interfere w/ cross matching of blood. Slight interference w/ Cu reduction methods (Benedict's, Fehling's, Clinitest). False -ve result may occur in ferricyanide test. Consider Na content in patients on a controlled Na diet. Prescribe to pregnant women only if benefit outweighs the risk. Discontinue breast-feeding or discontinue/abstain from therapy.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances, including diarrhoea, nausea & vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Lower oestrogen reabsorption & reduced efficacy of combined OCs. Prolonged excretion & elevated peak serum level w/ probenecid. Risk of renal impairment w/ high-dosage cephalosporins & strong-acting diuretics (eg, furosemide) or potential nephrotoxic prep (eg, aminoglycoside antibiotics). Increased INR w/ oral anticoagulants.
