Indications/Uses
Infection caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms: uncomplicated UTI caused by E. coli & Proteus mirabilis, uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by N. gonorrhoeae, otitis media caused by H. influenzae, Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis & S. pyogenes, pharyngitis & tonsillitis caused by S. pyogenes, acute bronchitis & acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, caused by Strep pneumoniae & H. influenzae.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 200-400 mg daily as a single dose or in two divided doses. Uncomplicated cervical/urethral gonococcal infections 400 mg as single dose. Childn 8 mg/kg/day may be administered as single daily dose or in two divided doses ≥50 kg or >12 yr Same as adult dose.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
May alter the normal flora of the colon & permit overgrowth of clostridia causing severe antibiotic associated diarrhea including pseudomembranous colitis. Absence of bacterial infection for prophylactic indication is unlikely to provide benefit to the patient & increases the risk of the development of drug resistant bacteria. Patients w/ renal impairment, undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis & hemodialysis. Carefully monitor patients on dialysis. History of GI disease, particularly colitis. Associated w/ fall in prothrombin activity. Renal or hepatic impairment, or poor nutritional state, as well as patients receiving a protracted course of antimicrobial therapy. Contains aspartame which may cause allergic type of reaction including anaphylactic symptoms & life-threatening episodes in susceptible patients. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, loose stools, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting; anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reactions (including shock & fatalities), skin rashes, urticaria, drug fever, pruritus, angioedema, facial edema, erythema multiforme, SJS, serum sickness like reactions; transient elevations in SGPT/SGOT, alkaline phosphatase, hepatitis, jaundice; transient elevations in BUN or creatinine, acute renal failure; headaches, dizziness, seizures; transient thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, neutropenia, eosinophilia; hyperbilirubinemia; genital pruritus, vaginitis, candidiasis, TEN.
Drug Interactions
Elevated carbamazepine levels when administered concomitantly. Increased prothrombin time w/ warfarin & anticoagulants. False +ve reaction in urine for ketones w/ tests using nitroprusside. False +ve reaction for glucose in urine using Clinitest, Benedict's soln, or Fehling's soln. False +ve direct Coombs test.
