Cefpodoxime proxetil
Indications/Uses
Susceptible infections including gonorrhea, otitis media, pharyngitis, lower resp tract infections eg, bronchitis, & UTI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Resp tract infection & UTI 100-200 mg every 12 hr. Skin & soft tissue infection 200-400 mg every 12 hr. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 200 mg as single dose. Childn Resp tract infection, UTI, skin & soft tissue infection 200 mg daily. Otitis media 400 mg daily. Childn ≥2 mth Pharyngitis or tonsilitis 5 mg/kg every 12 hr, up to a max of 200 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cefpodoxime proxetil or cephalosporin group of antibiotics.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ transient or persistent reduction in urinary output due to renal insufficiency. Concurrent treatment w/ potent diuretics. Pregnancy. Discontinue nursing during treatment or discontinue the drug.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances especially diarrhea.
Drug Interactions
Decreased absorption w/ antacids or histamine H2-receptor antagonists. Reduced renal excretion w/ probenecid.
