Azithromycin dihydrate
Indications/Uses
URTI including pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, otitis media; lower resp tract infections including bronchitis, pneumonia; skin & soft tissue infections. Treatment of uncomplicated genital infections due to Chlamydia trachomatis & uncomplicated gonorrhea from STDs. Prophylaxis in at-risk patients unable to take penicillin.
Dosage/Direction for Use
FC tab Adult & childn >14 yr (>45 kg) URTI, including sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis media; lower resp tract infection including bronchitis, pneumonia; skin & soft tissue infection 500 mg once daily for 3 days. STDs caused by Chlamydia trachomatis 1,000 mg (2 tab of 500 mg tab) as single dose. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 2 g (4 tab of 500 mg tab) as single dose. Susp Reconstitution: Add 8 mL of water. Childn 12-14 yr (36-45 kg) 10 mL once daily for 3 days, 8-11 yr (26-35 kg) 7.5 mL once daily for 3 days, 3-7 yr (15-25 kg) 5 mL once daily for 3 days, 6 mth-3 yr (up to 15 kg) 10 mg/kg as single daily dose for 3 days.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Concomitant use w/ digoxin & cyclosporin. Patients w/ severe renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI effects eg, nausea, abdominal discomfort, vomiting, flatulence & diarrhea. Allergic reactions eg, rash may occur in hypersensitive patients.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma conc of digoxin & cyclosporin. Reduced absorption w/ antacid.
