Ceftriaxone Na

Indications/Uses

Susceptible infections eg, chancroid, endocarditis, gastroenteritis (invasive salmonellosis; shigellosis), gonorrhea, Lyme disease, meningitis (including meningococcal meningitis prophylaxis), pneumonia, septicemia, syphilis, typhoid fever & Whipple's disease. Surgical infection prophylaxis.

Dosage/Direction for Use

IV/IM Slow IV inj over at least 2-4 min. Intermittent IV infusion over at least 30 min or by deep IM inj. Dose >1 g should be injected IM & divided between >1 site. Adult 1-2 g daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Severe infections Up to 4 g daily. Childn <50 kg & infant 20-50 mg/kg once daily. Severe infections Max: 80 mg/kg daily. Neonate Max: 50 mg/kg daily. IV doses should be given over 60 min. Doses >50 mg/kg should be given by IV infusion only. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 250 mg as single IM dose. Surgical infection prophylaxis 1 g as a single dose given 0.5-2 hr before surgery; 2-g dose before colorectal surgery. Prevention of secondary cases of meningococcal meningitis Adult 250 mg as a single IM dose. Childn 125 mg as a single IM dose.

Special Precautions

Concomitant use w/in 48 hr w/ products or soln containing Ca in neonates. Avoid in neonates w/ jaundice.

Adverse Reactions

GI & hematological changes eg, loose stools/diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, allergic dermatitis, pruritus, urticaria, edema & local-like inflammatory reactions in the vein wall after IV administration. Bilirubin encephalopathy in premature neonates. Neutropenia. Hypoprothrombinemia.
