Azithromycin dihydrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms: Lower resp tract infection (eg, acute bacterial exacerbation of COPD, community-acquired pneumonia & otitis media); URTI (eg, acute pharyngitis, tonsillitis); GI infection (eg, cholera, diarrhea, typhoid/enteric fever); uncomplicated skin & skin structure infections; STD (eg, non-gonococcal urethritis & cervicitis). Prophylaxis of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Mild to moderate acute bacterial exacerbation of COPD, pneumonia, pharyngitis, tonsillitis & uncomplicated skin & skin structure infection 500 mg on the 1st day followed by 250 mg once daily on day 2-5. Typhoid fever 1 g on day 1, then 500 mg for the next 6 days. Or 1 g once daily for 5 days. Genital ulcer disease 1,000 mg single dose. Urethritis & cervicitis 2,000 mg single dose. Childn Pharyngitis/tonsillitis 12 mg/kg once a day for 5 days (max 500 mg/day). Typhoid/enteric fever 20 mg/kg once daily for 5 days. Childn >6 mth Acute otitis media & community-acquired pneumonia 10 mg/kg as a single dose on the 1st day followed by 5 mg/kg on days 2-5 (max 500 mg/day).
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide antibiotic.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Rash, headache, dizziness; GI side effects eg, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain. Transient elevation of liver enzyme values, cholestatic jaundice (rare).
Drug Interactions
Should be taken at least 1 hr before or 2 hr after taking antacids. Avoid concomitant ergot derivatives. Caution when co-administered w/ digoxin & cyclosporin.
