Mupirocin
Indications/Uses
Primary bacterial skin infections eg, impetigo, folliculitis, urunculosis & ecthyma. Bacterial infections secondary to skin conditions eg, eczema, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, herpes, epidermolysis bullosa, & ichthyosis. Insect bites & infected minor traumatic lesions eg, skin ulcers, burns, cuts, abrasions, small lacerations, sutured wounds, biopsy sites, surgical incisions. Prevents bacterial contamination in minor burns, biopsy sites, incisions & other clean lesions. Prevents development of infection & permits wound healing in abrasions, minor cuts & wounds.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Apply sufficient amount on the affected area tid for up to 10 days.
Special Precautions
For external use only. Discontinue use in case of sensitivity or severe local irritation. Do not mix w/ other lotions, creams or oint on the affected area. Do not apply on the eyes or inside the nose. Do not use at site of central venous cannulation; in conditions where large amounts of polyethylene glycol may be absorbed eg, open wounds, extensive burns, broken skin), particularly in patients w/ moderate to severe renal impairment. Long-term use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Burning sensation, stinging, pain, itching, swelling, redness & rash.
Drug Interactions
Incompatible w/ salicylic acid 2%. Do not mix w/ water-containing vehicles or formulations eg, Aquaphor or coal tar soln.
