Metronidazole

Indications/Uses

For susceptible protozoal infections & prophylaxis of anaerobic bacterial infections.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Intestinal amoebiasis Adult 400-800 mg tid for 5-10 days. Childn 35-50 mg/kg daily in 3 divided doses for 5-10 days. Trichomoniasis Adult 2 g as a single dose or 600 mg-1 g in 2 or 3 divided doses for 7 days.

Administration

Should be taken with food: Take w/ or after meals.

Special Precautions

Do not use in patients w/ peripheral neuropathy, transient epileptiform seizures & leucopenia. Pregnancy (1st trimester). Lactation.

Adverse Reactions

GI disturbances especially nausea & unpleasant metallic taste, furred tongue, glossitis & stomatitis, weakness, dizziness, ataxia, headache, drowsiness, insomnia & changes in mood or mental state eg, depression or confusion. Skin rashes, urticaria, & pruritus. Urethral discomfort & darkening of the urine.
